Carbon Ion Radiotherapy in the Management of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Localized hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that is unresectable and non-transplantable can be treated by several liver-directed therapies. External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) an increasingly accepted widely utilized treatment modality in this setting. Accelerated charged particles such as proton (PBT) carbon ion (CIRT) offer technological advancements over conventional photon radiotherapy. In review, we summarize the distinct advantages of CIRT use for HCC treatment, focusing on physical biological attributes, outline dosimetric planning caveats. Based these considerations, posit may among best indications CIRT, it allows maximizing tumoricidal doses to target volume while minimizing dose organs at risk.
